If you are looking for Johor food in the Sutera area, Ban Deng Mee (板凳面) is a cosy place to put on your food list. Known for its handmade mee hoon kueh and traditional noodle dishes, this restaurant combines comforting food with a nostalgic old-school atmosphere.
We happened to visit on a rainy day, and that made the experience even better.
There is something about sitting down to a steaming bowl of noodles while it is raining outside. The hot soup was exactly what I needed — warm, comforting and very appetising.
What We Ordered at Ban Deng Mee
We ordered quite a few dishes because everything looked so tempting.
The Mee Hun Kueh was one of my favourites. The noodles were comforting and the hot soup was especially enjoyable because of the rainy weather. Ban Deng Mee actually specialises in handmade flour-based dishes, with traditional mee hoon kueh being one of its signature offerings.
We also had the Loh Mee, which was hearty and satisfying. It was the kind of dish that made me want to keep eating even though I was already getting full.
What I like about the food here is that it is simply appetising. You know that feeling when you keep looking at everyone else’s plate and thinking, “Maybe I should have ordered that too”? That’s exactly what happened.
The Bear Coffee Was Calling My Name
Now, let’s talk about the one thing that caught my attention immediately — Bear Kopi! 🐻☕
Ban Deng Mee actually lists Bear Milo among its signature drinks, so this isn’t just a random cute coffee creation. The little bear sitting on top of the Milo is just too cute, and it makes an ordinary cup of drink much more fun.
Don’t miss the coffee with bubble. This is another drink that impress me. Is this teh tarik still exist now? lol
Spacious Restaurant With an Old-School 80s Feel
Another thing I enjoyed was the space.
The restaurant is spacious, and it gives me that nostalgic 1980s old-school feel. It isn’t overly modern or fancy. Instead, there is a familiar kopitiam-style charm that makes the place feel relaxed and comfortable.
The atmosphere also fits the food very well. You’re eating traditional noodles and Malaysian comfort food in a setting that gives you a little taste of the past.
Interestingly, the story behind the Ban Deng Mee name also has a nostalgic connection. According to the restaurant, the name was inspired by the founder’s grandmother, who ran a home-style noodle stall in 1986. The founder remembered customers sitting on benches while enjoying steaming bowls of noodles, which became part of the inspiration behind the restaurant’s name.
So that old-school feeling isn’t completely accidental — there is actually a family story behind it.
A Place Recommended by a Regular
I recently heard about Ban Deng Mee from someone who regularly goes there. She lives in Johor but works in Singapore, and she usually makes a trip here.
I always find that interesting because there is something different about a restaurant becoming part of someone’s regular routine rather than simply being somewhere people visit once because it is trending.
For me, Ban Deng Mee was a pleasant Johor food stop — especially with the rain, the hot soup, the comforting noodles and that cute bear coffee waiting for me on my next visit.

And next time, I’m not leaving without ordering the Bear Milo.
