Kellie’s Castle owes its existence to a visionary Scotsman named William Kellie Smith. In the early 20th century, he arrived in Malaya, seeking to make his fortune in the booming rubber industry. His entrepreneurial spirit and tenacity brought him great success, and he soon acquired vast land in the lush region of Perak.

Inspired by his Scottish heritage, William Kellie Smith dreamt of building an imposing castle on his Malaysian estate, a home that would showcase both his affluence and his roots. Little did he know that his dream would later become an architectural marvel steeped in history.

Construction on Kellie’s Castle began in 1915, and it was designed by a team of skilled craftsmen and artisans. The castle’s design is an eclectic fusion of architectural styles, blending Moorish, Indian, and Roman influences. The result is a strikingly unique structure that stands out amidst the serene surroundings of Ipoh.

The castle’s grandeur was intended to include a magnificent six-story tower, a rooftop courtyard, and numerous rooms adorned with intricate carvings and embellishments. Unfortunately, fate had other plans.

Despite his efforts to complete the castle, William’s health began to deteriorate, and he tragically passed away in Lisbon in 1926. Though Kellie’s Castle remained abandoned for decades, it was rediscovered in the 1990s, and restoration efforts began.
